Google Notebook's Official Guide to Bars

Friday, April 11, 2008 5:24 PM

Today, it's my pleasure to announce the opening of two trendy new bars on the Notebook home page.

Uptown, we have the new editing toolbar. It offers a wide selection of text-editing tools from Google's text-editing artisans. All the standard tools from the old Notebook toolbar are still here, but we've added a new strikethrough button. More importantly, the toolbar has a fresh new look! And by "fresh," we mean freshly stolen from our friends over at Google Docs.

If you take a look downtown, you'll find our new export bar. There's nothing really new here: in fact, you've probably seen a few of these options before, scattered throughout Notebook. But it's nice to finally have a one-stop shop when you're ready to gather all the stuff you've collected in Notebook, and take it out on the town. You can plot a notebook of locations on a map, format any notebook as a document, and send a public notebook to Google Reader.

We hope you enjoy these new tools. I think I'm going out tonight and celebrate: by creating a notebook of all my favorite bars!

Nice update guys! Notebook is one of my most-used Google apps, so it's nice to see it grow and get even better.

Though, why is the no Google services bar at the top of the page? Or is it just me?

Good done.
But I'd like to see some function about share and comment.

Ummm... lately, I got some display issues when trying to move around notes. It's now somewhat impossible for me to reorder them or move them to the desired section by using the mouse. (I use Flock for web browsing).

Help!

The ability to indent bulleted lists seems to have been a casualty of this update! Pressing the Tab key sends you out of the list instead of indenting the bullet.

Please dear god bring this functionality back!!

Otherwise, the other features are rather nice, and it's nice to know this app isn't being ignored. ;-)

I've really been taking more and more advantage of Google Notebook as I come to understand it more and as it improves as a product. You mentioned exporting notebooks in this post so I thought I'd take a minute to talk a import.

I even noticed that you're recommending Google Notebook over Google Bookmarks by gently suggesting we try Google Notebook when browsing our bookmarks on the Google Bookmarks site. I it makes a lot of sense to encourage folks to use Google Notebook instead of Google Bookmarks as there are a lot of things you can do with Google Notebook that you can't do with Google Bookmarks. However, there's no clear path to migrating from Google Bookmarks to Google Notebook.

I'd like to suggest that you add a "feature" into Google Bookmarks that allows you to migrate a bookmark or a collection of bookmarks to either an existing notebook or to a new one. The feature should even allow you to delete the old bookmark after it has successfully been migrated to a notebook.

Google Notebook is one of the most exciting products I've been working with over the last 6 months. I'm a recent convert from Clipmarks to Notebook. It's a very useful tool and I'd like to see it continue to improve. I could even see it growing from a social perspective later this year.

i would like to echo Chris Wittenberg above. i miss the ability to indent paragraphs. please bring that back.

i am now resorting to bulleting paragraphs just because i want them indented. not an ideal approach.

also, i now have notebooks with many, many sections. the ability to collapse the list of the left pane would be useful.

i commend you on the improvements to the notebook. i find myself using it more and more.

It looks great!
BTW, I found a issue of Notebook in Firefox3.
In Firefox3, the fisrt character of each line of Notebook is overlap.

Will we ever see a Safari compatible Google Notebook? If so when?

Thank you,

In the same vein as "osolage" says above, the user needs much more control over the integration of Google Bookmarks to Notebook. I think most of the positive comments about Notebook are coming from nonusers of Bookmarks. The longtime dual-users of Bookmarks and Notebook don't want to simply "...ignore the Unfiled Bookmarks" section (as I read elsewhere), if they don't want to use Notebook for managing their Bookmarks. Another commenter said, "I'm very disappointed that there is no way to turn off bookmarks. I also do not want my bookmarks in Notebook. I was excited to see that labels had been added until I found out they are linked to my bookmarks and that if I modify the labels in Notebook it will modify the ones in bookmarks. That basically makes it useless for me. Please either enable us to turn off bookmarks or at the least exclude them from labels. If not then I will be better off storing my stuff the way I did it before Notebook. I enjoy using most of Google's apps and I do like the new look but I'd rather have the old Notebook back if I'm stuck with Bookmarks."

This is also disappointing to me. I'm a long time user of Google and its many wonderful services. I'm also a "non-user," however odd it may seem, of sites such as del.ici.ous to keep track of my bookmarks/favorites on a web host. But, for the first time, Google has me looking for an alternate provider of a service Google already provides... at least until this issue is fleshed out into a more intuitive design. Keep working.

SUGGEST A FEATURE IN GOOGLE NOTEBOOK:

We need a lot of improvements on Google Notebook to bring it up to par with the rest of Google's software solutions but I love it even in it's primitive state.

But GOOGLE! Please at least add a STAR =) come on Google Reader's got it!
