Stopping development on Google Notebook

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 6:30 PM

At Google, we're constantly working to innovate and improve our products so people can easily find and manage information. At times though, we have to decide where to focus our efforts and which technologies we expect will yield the most benefit to users in the long run.

Starting next week, we plan to stop active development on Google Notebook. This means we'll no longer be adding features or offer Notebook for new users. But don't fret, we'll continue to maintain service for those of you who've already signed up. As part of this plan, however, we will no longer support the Notebook Extension, but as always users who have already signed up will continue to have access to their data via the web interface at http://www.google.com/notebook.

If you haven't used Notebook in the past, we invite you to explore the other Google products that offer Notebook-like functionality. Here are a few examples, all of which are being actively improved and should meet your needs:
  • SearchWiki - We recently launched a feature on Search that will let you re-rank, comment, and personalize your search results. This is useful when you've found some results on Google Search that were really perfect for your query. You can read about how to use SearchWiki in this blog post.
  • Google Docs - If you're trying to jot down some quick notes, or create a document that you can share with others, check out Google Docs.
  • Tasks in Gmail - For a lightweight way to generate a todo list or keep track of things, we recently launched Tasks in Gmail Labs.
  • Google Bookmarks - For a tool that can help you remember web pages that you liked and access them easily, take a look at Google Bookmarks. You can even add labels to your bookmarks to better organize and revisit them.
While it's hard for us to make this announcement we believe it's the right decision for our users in the long run. And we're excited about all the new ideas we have for Docs, SearchWiki, Bookmarks and other products.

UPDATE, January 22.
Since this post went up, we've received lots of feedback. In particular, many of you seem concerned about what will happen to the information and data you've already put into Notebook. So we'd like to reiterate and clarify a few things.

First, since we're maintaining the service via http://www.google.com/notebook, every single notebook and all the existing features of the web interface will still be available. Those of you that already use the web interface should see no change in how the product behaves. Second, we guarantee that you will always have access to and control of your notebooks; we completely appreciate the effort and knowledge that your data represents and are committed to making sure you don't lose it. Finally, if you're looking for a way to easily export your information out of the product, the feature already exists. In the upper right corner of the web interface, under the "Tools" menu, there are two export options: "Export to Google Docs", and "Export as HTML".

We hope this addresses some of your concerns. Thanks for all your feedback and suggestions.

For me, the "Add to share items" checkbox is checked by default. Each time I want a note in Reader to remain private, I have to be sure I uncheck the box each time.

In my opinion, I think that Notebook should stay around as an interface. Then, the Google Docs "file list" should have an additional item time of "note". It could also have an item time of "RSS Post". Essentially, the Google Docs "file list" could be the one-stop-shop for searching through and organizing your diffent "files" in the cloud.

Honestly, I don't have a problem if they declare "notes" to just be "docs"... I just need the ability to highlight some stuff on a page, capture it quickly to a document... and have the ability to modify this after-the-fact... all while keeping this private by default. If that were done, I could survive without Google Notebook.

Google Notebook is by far the best application in the Google universe. Its educational benefits are tremendous - note taking, research, organization, etc. Whoever decided to kill it - shame on you.

Why don't you just put Notebook INSIDE docs instead? Yes, just put a "new notebook" option right where we see "new document" or spreadsheet of presentation. It would be really sad to know new users won't be able to share a whole Notepad anymore. Well, don't forget Docs is tottally different from Notebook, and it's obviously less practical when it comes to sharing: we can't EVEN share a whole folder on Docs.
And there's also the inconvenience of having to open a new page for every document we do and also... Notepads are a mess. We don't want mess on our Docs, you know that...
Please, think it twice, three times.
I'm a big fan of yours, and I will never forget Notebook.

I have just started using NoteBook, and was shown it by my dad, who has the extention. I tryed it out and am dissapointed that its going down the drain. The full page version SUCKS. It is so cool to have the little window on the same page.

So many people think negatively of this decision. Why are you going through with it?

I too am extremely disappointed with the demise of Notebook. I share notebooks with friends and business associates to coordinate various projects we are working on. Even though I can still use notebook for myself, I'm guessing that I can no longer share with others unless they already use it? Not good. This sort of thing will surely make me cautious about using some of your other great products for fear of them being dropped in the future.

Wow, I just heard about this because one of my many notebook converts came back disappointed... he couldn't open an account. Since switching to Chrome, I got used to losing the extension :(

Reading these comments, it's clear that Google has failed to understand who uses notebook, and is not listening. The primary concern I heard wasn't "what will happen to my notes," but rather "what are you smoking, not promoting such a great product and then ditching it?"

Initially I was surprised, usually google makes good decisions. That's when it hit me - this is them jumping the shark. No company stays #1 forever, or even long - especially in such a rapidly changing business.

Too bad, google - for you and for your fans. You should have listened more closely to the feedback from your users. Yes, your goal is to make money - but making profit the #1 priority in every decision is a surefire way to ruin.

Or maybe I'm wrong. There's still plenty of time for redemption. But it feels like it's just a matter of time now.

In case it's not obvious, I am crushed to see notebook go. It was far more important and clever than even Google realized - until I started explaining the ways it could be used to friends, even I didn't see how amazing it is.

Someone is reading these comments and seeing a ready-made customer base, with dollar bills in his eyes. If that's you, please work on your copycat notebook service immediately. I am ready to sign up, and I will even pay.

I find Google Notebook to be a very useful, manageable tool. I introduced my college aged son to it about a year ago and he has thanked me many times for showing him Google Notebook. He, too, is an avid user who creates notebooks and shares them with fellow students. Please rethink limiting and not maintaining this resource.

I can't actually see that Google has discontinued notebook, I mean, I have the latest update of Chrome and I still have access to notebook, and it seems to work as good or better than ever. Is this simply because I have a pre existing notebook account? This does shed light on the fact that my current browser has only recently been utilized though.

Google needs to market it's new and existing products more effectively. I only started using notebook a short while ago, as I was unhappy with what else is out there on the web. The web and it's users is maturing more slowly than google develops and shelves it's products. This is a very unfortunate announcement. None of the other existing products provide similar functionality.

This is a sad year.

Kinda disappointed on Notebook being end-of-lifed. I always thought that this would turn into something bigger.
But, thanks for a simple yet good product. And thanks, of course, for your consideration; for not shutting it down completely.

This is really too bad. I used Google Notebook as an example in an HCI Methods class last semester and our CogTool analyses showed that it took twice as much time to share a link with friends using GMail or a wiki set up in Wetpaint than it did using Google Notebook.

RémiL said...

Let's hope Google will eventually reconsider this decision as i think google notebook is a great concept.

Google Notebooks, although it does not generate immediate revenues, strengthens Google's offer to end-users. If you shut down all non-profitable apps such as notebook calendar and likes, users might one day give up with google mail if they dont get all these other functionalities on the same sign-on.

I knew a while ago that Google stopped developing notebook, but I only recently learned that no new users were allowed to sign up for it. I use notebook a lot, and this saddens me. I wonder how long until Google kills it entirely?

This sucks. Whenever I had a report to write up or an article I was working on, I'd just do a Google search, use Notebook to clip all the things I needed, export it to Docs, then write up the final article with all my sources neatly in one place. I think this is a very poor decision unless you guys are buying someone out that we don't know about yet to replace it... It was one of the big selling points I'd show my colleagues in my department when trying to get them to switch over to Google services.

I was and still am a heavy google notebook user. It saddens me that the development has been stopped. None of the existing google services provide similar functionality.

Please reconsider this decision.

Thank you.

I've used Notebook only for a little bit, so it's not that big of a deal for me. I guess the same functions are duplicated by other products (Google Docs and possibly Bookmarks), so no need for a similar service eh?

Unknown said...

@Andrew,

If by "similar" you mean an airplane is similar to a car because they are both used to transport people, then I suppose Google Docs and Google Bookmarks are "similar" to Google Notebook.

It's very disappointing. It was a very useful tool that could have been improved and merged with other Google products. Docs or bookmarks do not replace the usability of Google notebook.

this seems to be an error in judgment. i just discovered the convenience of Notebook AND Docs. the Notebook is markedly different and serves a purpose that Docs does not.

i was just about to invite 5 of my colleagues to Gmail so that they could collaborate on my Notebooks.

very disappointing direction on one of the very best products that Google has offered.

Curiosa said...

Don't you people GET IT? Those who already have been using it STILL CAN! IT will ALL STILL WORK. The only thing that changes is that anyone who is "NEW" to notebooks..Can't start now...1200 posts of whining when obviously nobody even read the original post by the guys at Google. Shame on you all...

Unknown said...

@Curiosa,

And that's exactly the problem. Not everyone has a Google Account. A lot of my friends don't. Not all of my family members do. I would like my friends and family to be able to use Google Notebook, but they have been locked out. Also, there are many improvements that could be made to it that clearly are not going to be made because the project is being put on the back-burner.

That's the rub of the problem. Of COURSE existing users can continue to use it, but that's not the point.

That's like if every auto-dealership closed down and every car manufacturer stopped producing new cars and you kept telling everyone to calm down, that they can still drive the cars they already own. A problem is still a problem, even if you personally don't suffer from it.

Michael said...

I agree with Bob.

And although current users still can use it, what happens when a new Firefox version comes out and Notebook does not work with it!

That also a problem!

This tool is a must have for me as well as a number of other users!

As of my posting this there was less than 1100 not 1200 comments!

May be, Google should open-source it, so that community can take it over and perhaps improve it too?

But the frontend - the Firefox extension and the drag and drop web interface - are no good without the backend. And the backend is presumably closely tied up with the internal Google infrastructure -- unless it could be easily ported to Google App Engine. Anybody have any idea what the backend looks like?

ApplewoodCourt said...

IMHO - this is one of the reasons why I think that "cloud" computing Web 2. yadda yadda will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of users. Company X gets everyone excited and on board with their product then 1) they go out of business overnight and you lose your data stuff 2) they decide to move on to their next greatest thing, leaving you and your data stuff behind 3) they move on to next latest and greatest thing so often that people stop using the company's stuff. Not to mention the security and privacy issues - at least with my PC, I can pull the network connection. =)

ApplewoodCourt said...

This got me to thinking ...

Obviously, if they aren't doing further development then ... it is clear that Notebook will soon go away. "No further development" is the swan song of a product and we can all rest assured that Notebook will soon go away. This brings me to my point, as a user of Notebook and other Google things, I am now much less inclined to use new Google "stuff" because Notebook is now getting yanked - what will be next? Gmail? Google Desktop?

Cheers

Unknown said...

@ApplewoodCourt,

I'm not sure what this has anything to do with "cloud computing". If this were an installed application which had bugs and the company decided to stop supporting the application, you'd run into the same problems.

In fact, I'm having this very problem with the NeatReceipts software. All of my paperwork gets scanned into the program's database (which is stored on my local machine). Then, I can export these as PDFs (which I store online to keep a backup.) Unfortunately, the software suddenly decided to no longer export the scans as PDFs (it crashes during this process.) Since the scans are all stored in the proprietary database for the NeatReceipts software, my data is essentially "stuck". I can still view it within the application, but I can no longer back it up or move my information elsewhere where it can be searchable, etc...

So, this problem isn't unique to "cloud computing"... it is simply specific to a company supporting a product, then deciding to drop support.

In the case of Google Notebooks, we can export our data. That's no problem. However, Google Notebooks became a very useful tool in our lives and now this tool is no longer being supported (no new features, no bugs fixed, etc...) So, it is a major bummer... no data lost... but a huge let down.

Unknown said...

@ApplewoodCourt,

I completely agree. I mean, how can we be certain that Microsoft might not just completely drop support and stop further development on Microsoft Word... or on Windows. It's about time we stopped becoming so dependent on software made by others who might drop support.

I believe we have reached the day and age where everyone can take the time to learn programming... write their own tools (or adopt open source ones)... then the only thing we would have to "rely" on are computer manufacturers.

I go with the sentiment and suggestion from another, place Notebook inside Google Docs if necessary. I can understand the business end of the point...but also look at marketing of it...if I would have known when I first used Notebook that it could go on my Blackberry (it is), iGoogle (there too), as an add-on for Firefox (yeah, there too), and as its own stand alone website for management (I link off iGoogle add on), I would tell you that it is the best cross platform app to capture the day in day out "bits" that happen every day...not having it forces me to use my BB's Notepad, but of course that's not in the cloud and if I don't have my Outlook or phone...not to mention the ease of researching links and products once online. NOTE TO DEVELOPERS: HELP! Use 10% of your famous 20% of time spent on new ideas to keep us up and running, over time this can develop well, as is testament to everyone who has tried another product AND still can't come close to what Notebook does and ease.

I've found a great alternative (I probably wouldn't even have looked if Notes hadn't been dumped)! http://www.zotero.org/
Zotero is fantastic -- much more powerful than Notes (think of it as Notes on academic steriods). The learning curve is steeper (you'll have to play around to duplicate Notes functionality -- and cloud sync is only available on the beta version). But the additional features are worth it! I've been using it to organize and take notes on various projects and for helping the kids properly cite web sources for their papers. You can peel off bibliographic information from most library sites and even commercial sites like Amazon.com. This is a serious research tool. I wish I had had something like this when I was in school. If nothing else, it takes the grunt work out of citing sources. Further, university and foundation sponsorship makes it look like it will be more stable than other "free" products (I've been burned a couple times now by Google policy changes).

As long as Google don't pull it completely -- which they've said they won't do -- then those of us who are already signed up have access. I agree it's a very useful product, and not as clunky as Documents, so remains my preferred platform for a wide range of freeform notes.

I just discovered Google Notebook a week ago. I kept using gmail, bookmarks, etc. to try and accomplish the same thing but nothing was quite right. When I found notebook I thought it was one of the best applications Google had.

I'm very sorry to see it go. It was a bit like the really great Linux KDE application BasKet http://basket.kde.org/ .

Ohwell. I read today about the new Google Wave... can't wait to try it, maybe that will be a good replacement.

Unknown said...

I don't think Google Wave is going to be a replacement for Notebook. I use Google Docs when I want to share and collaborate on stuff. I use Notebook, however, for private/personal information that I want to be able to reference later, which comes from websites, that I have no intentions on sharing, and that I want to capture quickly and move on.

To accomplish this same thing in Google Docs would be slow and cumbersome. I would need to copy the information from the page, then paste into a new Google Doc.

I'm not sure how Google Wave will even come close to accomplishing this, as I do not want to discuss, collaborate, or share this information.

If Google Docs had a way to highlight text on a webpage and click a button or hit a key to automatically capture the information to a document, then automatically hide this document and file it away under a pre-defined label, I will finally be able to do away with Google Notebook.

Perhaps Google Scripts will be the answer.

The real problem here is awareness.

You guys saw the need to spend money on TV ads to advertise Chrome (redundant), but you neglect the fact that the web advertises itself. Google became known because of it's usefulness not because it was able to advertise on TV. Are you becoming so gigantic that you're starting to think like Microsoft?

Microsoft will be advertising Live Search (Kumo or Bing or whatever its new name will be) - do you think anyone is going to notice? No. Why? Because if it isn't useful who cares anyway!

I've used Google since 2003 and have been a fan ever since, but I've never even heard of Google Notebook. When I finally did find out about it (and got excited about it), you guys decide to stop development. And for what? To focus on personalised search which nobody's aware of how it enhances their search experience and those who are aware of it are distraught with privacy infringement. And developing Chrome (the ultimate spyware). It's one thing to gather data of your users it's another thing to not allow them the option to disable it (referring to Chrome and personalised search).

Google have you lost your way? May I turn your attention to your own philosophy: 1. Focus on the user and all else will follow.

By stopping Notebook you disregard your users. By not broadcasting awareness of Google Notebook and then saying it's not popular is to shoot oneself in the foot. To focus your attention on personalised search (a euphemism for spyware) is to focus on YOUR agenda not the users.

Does power really corrupt? Has Google become so huge that it has forgotten what made her great in the first place? Return to greatness for the path you have chosen leads to Microsoftism.

He venido usando notebook desde hace tiempo.

I really like Notepad, and I wish that it was possible to add a link/icon to your main gmail page to access it.

I'm sorry development is stopping. It was a handy tool for me.

Hey guys.
Don't be fools.
It's 6 months since you've stopped develop of notebook and people are still here to ask for it. Please think again about your choose.
We need it and we need new features and bug fixes.

If you use a beta version of Firefox 3.5, here's a way to install the extension:

* save the extension to your computer: right-click and select "save link as".
* download 7-zip, an excellent open-source software for archiving files, and install it.
* right-click on the extension (google-notebook.xpi), click on "7-zip" and then on "open archive". Right-click on "install.rdf", select "Edit" and replace "3.0.*" with "3.5.*". Save the file, close Notepad and update the archive.
* now you can drag the .xpi file to your browser and install the extension.......from google operating system.com

Now, I probably know why Notebook was canned. http://wave.google.com and watch their video at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_UyVmITiYQ

Wave is Google Notebook and much much more. I can't wait.

Kazie said...

I was surprised that I had not known the Notebook had been dropped. Oh, my.. Any of my researching activities, at work and private, heavily rely on the application. While I'm disappointed, I'm pleased finding Google have been maintain it so far. Please keep it that way, because I love the application, and I can't have things done without it.

Unknown said...

Wave is Notebook, and so much more? That's like saying Facebook is Twitter, and so much more. Don't get me wrong... Wave is awesome. I can't wait for it. However, Wave is a communication tool. I have never used Notebook as a communication tool and never plan to.

As far as I can tell, you can't highlight some text and images on a web page and click a button and instantly capture the content (with a reference) to a personal storage area you can access from anywhere using Wave. Wave lets you do a lot of great stuff, but what made Notebook powerful is the extension... and the extension is exactly what they've stopped supporting directly. It just makes no sense.

ersouza said...

Bob, Wave is meant to be extensible/expandable. I would place good money on such an extension popping up for it early, so it effectively could replace Notebook.

Unknown said...

Effectively, yes... but there's a difference between physical reality and actual practice.

For instance, Google Docs also has an API. So, "effectively", someone could write an extension to do the same thing the Google Notebook extension does, but have it create documents within Google Docs.

That would serve my purposes just fine, for the most part. The other aspect I would be missing would be the ability to scan a stream of notes quickly. In Google Docs, you'd have to open each document one at a time. Or else, each "note" could be a different page within the document.

Nonetheless, it has been known that Google Docs has an API and it has been known that Google Notebooks is losing its support. And, effectively, the extension could be re-written to use Google Docs instead. And yet, after all of this time, it still hasn't.

So, likewise, people could be saying for YEARS that Google Wave could effectively replace Google Notebook, but until it actually happens... it's just a pipe-dream. I use Google Notebook today, and I use it every day. I don't have time to wait and dream for a replacement.

What's worse is, I would rather be able to export my notebooks using the XML format. This is broken in my account for some reason, so I am only able to export as HTML. I also cannot export to Google Docs. So, my data has been hijacked by a service that I WISH were supported, but the support is gone. I do not yet see a replacement that is worth my time, so I continue to use an unsupported service.

Google Wave could also effectively replace Google Docs... but nobody would be happy if they announced that Google Docs will no longer be enhanced and will no longer be supported as of today... but don't worry, Google Wave will be out later this year and may effectively be able to do the same, plus much more. That's just not the right way to keep your loyal users loyal.

slowpoison said...

@Bob You will be able to write Rich Text docs in Wave and manage them using tags etc. I'm sure you'll be able to export those also. And the API will let you write the kitchen sink.

What else are you looking in Notebook that Wave won't be able to replace? We would like to know.

Wave, OTOH, will let you do much more. Gears support, playback, conversion to many other formats like blogs etc. There's a reason Google stopped development on Notebook. The new stuff they are bringing obviates the need for Notebook.

Unknown said...

@slowpoison,

I agree... I am very familiar with Wave. My point isn't that Wave isn't great technology, it's that it is still months away. Why don't they just drop support for Wave because they could conceivable come up with something much better than Wave in 5 years?

The point is, don't stop supporting your customers and THEN let them know a replacement is coming. Keep supporting your customers... release a replacement... then help your customers migrate... then close the old technology. They have done this with GrandCentral to Google Voice... Writely to Google Docs... Google Bookmarks to Google Notebook then back to Bookmarks... etc...

The main thing I am looking for has LITTLE to do with a UI. I don't care so much about the UI. All I want is the browser extension, which they have not open sourced. I want to be on SOME OTHER WEBSITE (not Google Wave)... let's say it's a news site... or a message forum... a shopping site... or the IRS's website. Then, when I see a snippet of useful information that I fear may not be there in a month or a year, I want to be able to highlight it... click a simple button in my browser... and instantly this information is captured in Google Docs (or Google Wave) for reference later... in a month... in a year... in ten years.

That's it. I don't need it to do more than that. If it DOES do more, that's wonderful... I'm sure someone else will enjoy the extra features... I may appreciate them some day when I actually find a use for them myself. In the meantime, this is all I want.

Google Notebook does this for me. I liked the fact that they were integrating Google Notebook with Google Bookmarks... I use both every single day. Then, Chrome came out. Since Chrome is not integrated with Google Bookmarks (yet), I have been missing the integrated Google Bookmarks I once had with Firefox and the Google Toolbar.

Also, since they dropped support for the Google Notebook extension, I should never expect to see this extension in Chrome any time soon. So, this means I am stuck with a browser that I now have to jump through hoops to capture useful information on the web and to have a unified set of bookmarks across machines.

Unknown said...

One day, I hope someone will integrate Chrome's bookmarks with Google Bookmarks... this will make me happy. Then, one day, someone will either write an extension for Chrome to do Google Notebook-like behavior using Google Docs as the storage medium... or Google Wave as the storage medium. Knowing that Wave won't be out until later this year, I'd much rather someone worked on a Google Docs solution first, then a Google Wave solution later.

The point of frustration is this is all functionality I enjoyed for months and months and months... then, wham, it was all taken away from me. While it's true, it may have only been taken away because I fell in love with Chrome... but my hope was always that they would start integrating these services into Chrome as they have been in the Google Toolbar... then the wind was ripped from my sails when they talked of the demise of Google Notebooks.

I'm not frustrated because I don't think computers aren't capable of handling these features or that it won't be possible in the future... I'm frustrated that Google is going backwards with their support. They seem to have the equivalent of ADHD. They see a shiny new object (in this case, Wave)... and they chase after this shiny new object, leaving everyone else to eat their dust and their old no-longer-supported products.

I am GREATLY looking forward to Wave... and I WANT Wave to be THE replacement for Google Talk... Gmail... Google Voice... Google Notebooks... Google Docs... and MORE. I want there to be one single place I can store all of my information and to access this information in different ways, depending on the use. I want to be able to perform ONE SEARCH and find my information no matter how I acquired it. UNTIL THEN, I want all of the existing services to continue to be supported... and to continue to be enhanced.

The big deal about Wave is the protocol. The UI is am after-thought. Those same features they demoed for Google Wave could have also been built into Gmail... or Google Docs... using the Wave Protocol in the background. Instead, they built a whole new interface just for it... which is nice, but causes their other UI's to sit around waiting for developer attention.

"Nonetheless, it has been known that Google Docs has an API and it has been known that Google Notebooks is losing its support. And, effectively, the extension could be re-written to use Google Docs instead. And yet, after all of this time, it still hasn't."

Webclipping for Google Docs is already available through extensions like gDocsBar.

Unknown said...

@ersouza,

That's great. However, I use Chrome. Do they have a bookmarklet version? I'd use that... or could adapt it to a Chrome Extension.

What do you do when your company blocks google docs but allows notebook? - Notebook development should continue, as this is the only service I can use for work. It's good that you have kept it going for us - thanks

ersouza said...

LOL, Bob. No, I don't think there's a bookmarklet for gDocsBar, so it sounds like you're waiting until Chrome gets full blown extension support.

Unknown said...

Chrome does have extensions support... well, at least the latest dev build does. So, it's just a matter of someone writing the extension.

I am experimenting with the Google Docs API now... hopefully I'll have something I can use, soon.

Kevin said...

I guess I am late to the news, but am stressed and truly bummed to learn that Notebook is not longer being developed. The "note this" feature, where I could easily copy certain text to Notebook as I surfed, was easily my most used tool in Google. I have found nothing to replace it.

I am growing increasingly tired of Google. It seems they are slowly coming overbloated and less "useful" than they once were, and spending more money telling us what they think we should have, instead of listening to what we want.

Very sad.

I've only just found out about google notebook (through a suggestion on the google help page no less). This is exactly the product I've been needing. Google Docs is worthless to me because it doesn't work in Firefox, and takes forever to load. The tasks tool requires the latest version of gmail to even have a chance of using it (which doesn't work with a dial-up connection), and I've had that Lab enabled for months without it ever once actually being on the gmail page (when I'm at work and have access to a fast enough connection for the latest monstrosity of gmail to load).

I'm so disappointed. I know I can keep using it until it's killed but I find it one of the most useful web based apps that Google has provided other than gmail. Bookmarks and Google searchwiki aren't a substitute. I use Google Search and Notebook for my work and research. Google Docs is too heavy and slow for quick notes, links and tagging that Notebook does. I think Google Wave is brilliant but I'll never need a collaboration tool of that nature. I work on my own and the people I communicate with are doing well to open Outlook to get an email. Sad. The closest app Google has to a private wiki and they kill it.

Ooh well, just use evernote, also with webclipping, and mobile and desktop sync things. They also have a google notebook importer...

Unknown said...

The only reason I don't want to use Evernote (or others like it) is because I like to keep all of my "cloud" information in Google's systems. Now, if Evernote had the ability to automatically put the captured info into Google Docs (without a manual click of the button needed to perform this), then this would be great. Also, I like the way Google integrates their various services. With a third-party service, the integration will be limited to whether or not that third-party decided to link into an API of Google's.

I did make a quick proof-of-concept bookmarklet myself. It automatically takes the highlighted text on a page and uploads it to Google Docs. I'm next going to experiment with a text box whose content automatically gets stored in a Google Doc. In the meantime, the interface for this is a bit clunky and has some issues... and there may be some issues I will never be able to resolve because of shortcomings in the Google Docs API.

Again, for me personally... I'm not looking for "any service that will do X"... I'm looking for "any service that will do X and will store it in the Google cloud". I don't want to have to log into three or four different sites to find my stuff, get used to three or four different ways to search for my stuff, get used to three or four different APIs invented by three or four different third-party groups. I want one place for all of my information and one basic API I can use to programatically gain access to it all and one login to control it all.

Please please please bring it back!

Unknown said...

I agree that Wave will not suffice for what notebook provides -- nice, but one thing that is great about Notebook is the svelte/fast/simple usage. I agree with the previous post about wanting to use Google’s cloud vs. evernote's -- one of the reasons I started to migrate all of my data over to Google was notebook and how integrated gmail, calendar, notebook, docs was becoming -- should have known it was too good to be true. Something that is a bit annoying with all of this is the silence from Google on this matter -- I wish a developer would chime in here and explain the logic... is it a money thing? or is another app in the works that usurps? I don't understand the silence, it feels very Microsoft to me

Unknown said...

My hope is that Google's silence is because they plan (hope?) to use Google Wave (possibly combined with Google Docs?)... and a revamped plugin... to give us back the notebook functionality in a different form. Perhaps they thought it would be pointless to continue to support one method when they already planned another method, but wanted to keep this new method under wraps until they had something substantial to show.

I hope this is the case. I really hope this ISN'T just a case of short-sightedness and the assumption that everyone uses notebook in the same ways.

C'mon Google, you have never let down people like this before! Don't break the tradition. There is simply no alternative to the simplicity and accessibility of Notebook!!! Atleast keep the browser extension as it is and do no more development. Even if we find bugs in it in future, being hardcode fans of Google we don't complain or damage Google's image.

I was way too excited about Google Notebook, when I used it for the first time.

I have used it for couple of projects successfully. It's features were like never before on the web.

I have always advised everybody to start using it. Whatever reasons Google might have, I am not happy with this decision.

addiv said...

Why is the decision to stop development on such a useful tool so inscrutable? Atleast tell us that maybe the development team has been shifted over to working on a similar tool set for Wave/Chrome ? Using the other services suggested isn't all that great an option because they aren't as tightly integrated with the rest of the google suite- gmail, gcal, tasks.

What would it take to get this product going again?

I hope other Google apps will take over, then, and have some of the features of Google Notebook. I don't actually use Notebook to save web clippings (apparently no one else did, either, which is probably why it went by the wayside). I use it as a way to categorize my notes, similar to folders in a hard drive, except w/ visability options. E.g.: A notebook named "Recipes (Salads)" w/ Sections like "W/Meat", "W/outMeat","Pasta","Warm", etc. Then I can keep many recipes separate under those sections. Or notebook: "Plants (Shade)" w/ sections: "flowers tall" "flowers short" "veggies" "hosta varieties", etc. Or traveling: "Vietnam '09" w/ sections: "hostels" "flights" "restaurants" etc. And I can collapse all but what I need...or open only certain ones up...or open them all! Google Docs doesn't have that capability, but if Google Notebook is going by the wayside, I hope they give it that feature!!!

Matthew said...

This is very disappointing. I for one like using the notepad. Its a lot faster at loading than gDocs and sometimes its nice to be able to jot something down without the complexity of a full fledged word processor.

Since your stopping development can you at least integrate the features of Google Notepad into gMail. allow us the ability to save unsent messages as notes without the Draft designation.

You guys have great ideas but need to integrate them closer into your other applications like gMail.

I'm really sad to learn about the status of g-notebook (but with a few months of delay).

Perhaps notebook was so flexible that most of us used it in ways not in line with what Google thought it would be used?

I used it extensively, and for different purposes. Notes related to my development work, personal notes, trip related notes, every once in a while a link, and all fits nicely. Tabs/labels allow us to access the information quickly, and on top of that, a superb search facility to locate the information I knew I'd written there but couldn't easily locate because of the volume. On top of that, they are dated, which makes summarizing my monthly activities so easily.

I really hope that no further development does not imply
discontinuation at some point in the future.

If your are listening Google, notebook is a great product for many, and as pointed by others in this forum, not a tool easily replaceable with google docs or other applications. Tasks is great, but for short notes.
We are left with access to the equivalent of Books and pocket agendas, missing the important middle ground: the blank notebook.

Sad, really sad...

If anyone from Google is reading this, which I doubt as it is the 1,176th comment.

I accept you are no longer going to develop the Notebook product, but you are going to keep the service running which is great. This means people, like me, can continue to use it.

An important part of the Notebook is the Firefox extension which quickly allows you to take notes and retrieve notes while browsing the net. I understand the extension is still available at http://dl.google.com/firefox/google-notebook.xpi but I would make two reasonable requests.

Can you release the extension under an open license and upload the extension to the official Mozilla Add-ons repository. This way the community can maintain the extension and develop it further so that it will continue to be supported with future versions of Firefox. As of Firefox 3.5 Beta it is now broken.

I understand any user can simple change the version restrictions in the extension, but each individual user from now on will have to do this. No one user will be allowed to publish a modified version of the extension to the Mozilla Add-ons repository because the extension remains copyright to Google and for an individual user to modify the extension and try publish it would break copyright and thus Mozilla will not publish it.

So please open the extension under an open license. Even a Creative Commons Attribution license would work.

I am very sad that I can not use google notebook extension in the new firefox 3.5.

I am a heavy user of notebook and there is no other google app with the same functionality for copy and indexing text from web. As a scientist is very handy for me and I use to copy text from papers and add a comment and tag to them. So latter when writing your paper is easy to find related ideas.
And this is only possible to do it quick and without missing the focus, using the extension.

The other thing good about the notebook that is not in google docs is the collapsible entries keeping the comment and tag, and that you can grab them and move to other folders.

Also, google docs is not adding the date and webpage title and url when copy paste a bit of a web page.

This is a unique product and a productivity enhancer. It is a pity that is not going to be continued.

Probably the extension has been switch off because would be difficult to add advertising on it.

I'm really bummed about this too. I know it was a beta product but I somehow became really reliant on this to keep track of random notes. Google Docs are blocked at work but not Notebook. I also have a shortcut to the mobile version of Notebook on my phone (Samsung Instinct) since it's notes program is terrible.

As long as Google does not kill Notebook and I can keep backing my Notebooks, then I am good to go. Turning it over to the Open Source community would really be great. Hopefully Google will have a change of heart.

This is really bad!! I have been using notebook for my business and for persanal recipes for years now. I was on its way to be great. This is very sad. I hate to see good applications go to the graveyard.

Yup, while its not actually being deleted, it does mean no new users can join, it is a superb app, just makes me concerned that Google may decide to just shut it down, and delete all the data (even though it says it won't) much like AOL did with Hometown and all users photos. This app obviously has such a large user base, and it will surely now dwindle and die. So much for the future of cloud computing. C

I was disappointed by this too. I use notebook a lot and absolutely love it. The quick and easy integration to igoogle /ig) was a big plus for me too.

But like many others I do understand, I appreciate all the services google offer and its like any business you can only spread yourself so thin before needing to refocus.

Shame. I'm glad I can still use it though. One of the most useful Google Apps. I use it as my Phone Log to track all phone messages for my business and action taken on them. It's a great tool that I use in many other ways. Please bring back development on it sometime and/or integration into other great Google Apps. If you do, please make individual notes printable. Thanks TONS!

I've been trying to provide an outlet for this frustration as well as trying to save Notebook. Haven't had much luck, but would love to get your thoughts / help at my blog.

Google notebook is really the only reason I'm using the other Google services. Without it I would look elsewhere. I understand the need to shift attention to other more pressing matters, but I truly hope that Google Notebook stays as you have indicated... Would be such a shame to see it slowly die.

Let me just add my name to the list of those disappointed with Google. Notebook was one of the best products offered. Perhaps Google could take a poll to find out if there is sufficient interest to revive it?

I'm all for Google Notebook returning as one of the first branded applications utilizing the Google Wave system.

Oh ... I just installed Firefox 3.5 ... it seems that's it for Google Notebook, finally. :-(
Without a working browser add-on ... forget it! Just a "data cemetery".
Nothing left but export and move on to the competitors. Very sad! I liked the simple design and clear functions on Google Notebook much more ...

I just made the HUGE mistake of installing Firefox 3.5 on my computer and I lost the Google Notebook add-on that I had on the previous Firefox version. I'm mad as hell and I don't know what to do to restore this add-on which was so important to my daily browsing.Shame on you Google.

I don't know if you read all these comments, but I was wondering if you could make Google Docs have a little more of the same functionality/interface as Google Notebook?

I don't really use Google Notebook to clip/capture webpages. I use it to index scholarly papers and journal articles for research and annotated literature reviews. I find it useful to sort ideas with tags and to be able to shuffle around ideas as I eventually organize my thoughts. I tend to think in short bursts of ideas rather than full sentences, and the interface of Google Notebooks was quite useful, like a set of index cards that could occupy more than one file-folder. Maybe do Google index?

For those of you with Firefox 3.5, you can still use Google Notebook!! You can get a version of notebook extension which works perfectly in Firefox 3.5 from this page:

The feedback itself tells you that its a technology simple yet effective

You may stop active development

But do not hesitate to enhance the product when a new idea comes along

Please save Google notebook. I think it's totally helpful. I've used it for over 2 years. Very sad if they close the development T_T

I think Google lost a chance to develop Notebook into something that would compete with Evernote. Fortunately, I use Chrome, and no plug ins to access my Notebook...just too bad that it's no longer in development.

Mike said...

Too bad... Many people love it and rely on it, how come Google see this plan as a benefit for users in a long run??

jesuscheung said...

pls re-continue the development! it's a great product! i so much prefer this than that MS notebook.

Notebook was one of the most useful net research tools. With more and more information being collected from the net and less from books in libraries, closing down notebook is a big mistake. I am also very disappointed by google's refusal to even continue the notebook facility in its present form..

This is the second google product which i used intensively that has been discontinued: The Firefox Browser Sync. and now the Firefox Notebook Extension.

While I suspect that these are all moves to disadvantage Firefox in favour of Google Chrome, I still think Google owes it to its consumers to continue products which have been in the market for sufficient period of time and which have substantial users.

This is yet another reminder of how stupid I have been to surrender myself to google and google products.

yes, I do feel strongly about this :)
