Stopping development on Google Notebook

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 6:30 PM

At Google, we're constantly working to innovate and improve our products so people can easily find and manage information. At times though, we have to decide where to focus our efforts and which technologies we expect will yield the most benefit to users in the long run.

Starting next week, we plan to stop active development on Google Notebook. This means we'll no longer be adding features or offer Notebook for new users. But don't fret, we'll continue to maintain service for those of you who've already signed up. As part of this plan, however, we will no longer support the Notebook Extension, but as always users who have already signed up will continue to have access to their data via the web interface at http://www.google.com/notebook.

If you haven't used Notebook in the past, we invite you to explore the other Google products that offer Notebook-like functionality. Here are a few examples, all of which are being actively improved and should meet your needs:
  • SearchWiki - We recently launched a feature on Search that will let you re-rank, comment, and personalize your search results. This is useful when you've found some results on Google Search that were really perfect for your query. You can read about how to use SearchWiki in this blog post.
  • Google Docs - If you're trying to jot down some quick notes, or create a document that you can share with others, check out Google Docs.
  • Tasks in Gmail - For a lightweight way to generate a todo list or keep track of things, we recently launched Tasks in Gmail Labs.
  • Google Bookmarks - For a tool that can help you remember web pages that you liked and access them easily, take a look at Google Bookmarks. You can even add labels to your bookmarks to better organize and revisit them.
While it's hard for us to make this announcement we believe it's the right decision for our users in the long run. And we're excited about all the new ideas we have for Docs, SearchWiki, Bookmarks and other products.

UPDATE, January 22.
Since this post went up, we've received lots of feedback. In particular, many of you seem concerned about what will happen to the information and data you've already put into Notebook. So we'd like to reiterate and clarify a few things.

First, since we're maintaining the service via http://www.google.com/notebook, every single notebook and all the existing features of the web interface will still be available. Those of you that already use the web interface should see no change in how the product behaves. Second, we guarantee that you will always have access to and control of your notebooks; we completely appreciate the effort and knowledge that your data represents and are committed to making sure you don't lose it. Finally, if you're looking for a way to easily export your information out of the product, the feature already exists. In the upper right corner of the web interface, under the "Tools" menu, there are two export options: "Export to Google Docs", and "Export as HTML".

We hope this addresses some of your concerns. Thanks for all your feedback and suggestions.

So, this means Google Docs is (slowly) replacing both Google Bookmarks and Google Notebook. One would HOPE that they create a bookmark-like plug-in which allows one to easily and quickly capture information into a document within Google Docs and to be able to view all documents within a given folder as a "river of notes" so-to-speak. This will give everyone what they're looking for, I believe.

I hope the river can be ordered. That was one of the great things about Google Notebook. You could throw URLs, web clippings and personal notes willy nilly into a pile and then begin to prioritise them through drag and drop.

Bring Back Notebook!!!! It is a shame this awesome prodcut is no longer in development.

I really hope they re-consider the decision to stop development on this one day ... I find it a very useful tool for very rapidly dumping any useful information I capture during my working day, my thinking on various problems, etc. I'm working on, and have it immediately available to refer whenever I'm online.

Ehh the number of people comming here is slowly decreasing :( No way google will resume the development...

jlm said...

no no ;-) we're just busy finding alternatives. Mind you, I found a straight and simple way to sort out that "left-behind" issue on notebook: the bookmarks. Well, you can simply define in your "google page" the groups of people (gmail issued) that can access the information.
Google wants us to keep our neurons fit, finding new trails... and fidling around :-) . anyhow it works beautifully!

However... please put the notebook back on tracks. Tks

Again, I have to say I really wished Google would reconsider EOL this tool. It is so hand and useful. And the FireFox as well as the IE extensions, need to be brought back and updated. I use those so extensively, I've not updated to the new version of FF, because if I do, I'll lose that extension.

Please guys, reconsider this, and please continue to supply the extension for those of us that love and use this tool, extensively.

I recommend using Zotero in Firefox for an even better "Notebook" than Google was able to do. Too bad they gave up on Notebook as it was one of my favorite Google Apps.

We are still waiting for Google to realize the error of their ways and reverse their decision to stop developing Notebook.

honestly put, Notebook was more successful than docs can be, it has so many things that DOCS lacks...

1) you can't "jot down some quick notes"since you have to create document and THEN do that...

2) DOCS doesn't save the reference along the text copied, while NOtes was used (in my case) exactly for that, so i won't do the copy-pasting or forget that. especially for my research and other quick materials... it said: "pasted from" and THAT small part was the most important element for me.

3) most people enjoyed the "one ID, many applications".. so had i... now we'll have to search about at the competitions...

shame... you have lost such a marketshare with this small product. if only you could realise what an important element it was in making customers happy. especially the students, businesses and so on.

back to the ol' drawing board for us.

Unknown said...

oh.. and... by the way... you said everything will remain the same (in the notes' applications?

well... NOT... since, now the links (references) are not auto-pasting when something is added .

this was one hell of a decision guys... it's really bad.

and no, docs or others are not good substitutes for this product... so please DON"T refer people to use three different types of products instead of one... that beats the purpose of cutting costs, time and efficiency.

now i'm really disappointed.

I just started using Notebook last week and was ecstatic! Then I read this blog entry. Darn. The browser extension is EXACTLY what I needed to really improve my efficiency and save time and keystrokes.

Come on, Google, at least hire one person to work on it...hear our voices, console our cries!

Unknown said...

Google Notebook was awesome! Primarily because Notebook + Firefox Extension was an unbeatable combination: just highlight some text, click "note this" and wallah, you've got a note entry with the quoted text as a comment, and a link to the original website.

A very unobtrusive way to note things as opposed to the various alternatives out there (including those proposed by Google) that require several steps and frequent use of a note taking interface to "input" notes. On the other hand, with the un-castrated version of Google Notebook, making notes was very natural (as mentioned) and only rarely would I need to go out of my way to log in to the actual interface ... usually to re-categorize notes.

I don't see why you would stop supporting such a service. It would have been lovely if you just let the service be (with Firefox Extension).

At the highest level, your stated goal is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". Having gotten people like to me to use and come to rely on one of your products, could you at least not make my personal information harder to organize and more difficult to access?

it was the application I used more than all others in docs.google.com. I don't like very much docs.google.com, I prefer Google Notebook, it's a wonderful application. There's nothing equal in docs.google.com Best regards from Italy.

Richard Bruce Baxter said...

Do not cancel this product - it is critical that users have some place to store their electronic notes online without having to worry about formatting or load times.

Unknown said...

Google Docs just compete with Google notebooks.

Google notebooks allows me to create sections to store my notes in and quickly and easily re-arrange them, as well as tag and comment on notes individually.

In google Docs I need to create headings for sections and manually move stuff.

I cant collapse notes in google docs to just see tags either.

Unknown said...

I think a perfect way to give Google Notebook functionality in Google Docs is to do the following:

1) Create a browser extension similar to the Google Notebook one. Each captured "note" gets stored in a unique Doc. The extension should let you easily move these docs from one "folder" or sub-folder to the next.

2) Create a special "view" in Google Docs which allows each document to be fully viewed within the Google Doc List. Think along the lines of how Google Reader has a list view, or an expanded view.

3) With the above requirements met, I could go into Google Docs... view a particular folder and see all sub-folders and documents contained within. I can expand the sub-folders to further see the documents under those (this is existing Google Doc List functionality). With this special "expanded view" or "preview view", I would essentially be seeing what I saw before in Google Notebook. Each sub-folder would be like a section... each sub-sub-folder would be like a sub-section, and so on... then, each Doc would be viewable (and possibly even editable) right within the Google Docs List viewer.

The only missing piece would be the automatic URL linking the note to the source. I would be satisfied if this were simply part of the document contents.

up to now, there is not a single product or combination that comes near to what we can do using the Google services. It's not just a matter of notebook, it's the whole interactivity, integration.
Mind you, now GWaves is somehow a next step, but the "on the fly" + Gdocs + Calendar + Gmail + html generation + + + etc... etc... is top notch when it comes to perform simple but tremendously efficient "on the fly" CMS.
With one account, I can manage blogs, stats, docs, project management, mails, graphics, and so many more data from different sources that nothing comes near to that. And it's free! Should Google ask me for a yearly fee for all that it would be a pleasure compared to the "who-you-know" cumbersome and complicated "groupware" solutions. Google is the present, else is ... history. 20 years youger, I would have camped on Google's doorstep, hunger strike and the whole bunch... 'til they hired me ;-). They have a dominant position? And so what... it's probably because others drove into the same thinking as the dinosaurs that left the IT world, or are starting to creak :-)
So, now, Googlessssss "will ya please put a couple of bright chaps on the pad" ! and ... relaunch

We still can use notebook with Firefox 3.5.x - here's the solution.
--------------
* save the extension to your computer: right-click and select “save link as”.
* download 7-zip, an excellent open-source software for archiving files, and install it.
* right-click on the extension (google-notebook.xpi), click on “7-zip” and then on “open archive”. Right-click on “install.rdf”, select “Edit” and replace “3.0.*” with “3.5.*”. Save the file, close Notepad and update the archive.
* now you can drag the .xpi file to your browser and install the extension.

I have Google stock but am so ready to sell it. I buy companies not just "shares" and when I cannot find a way for the company to respond to me when using their product, boy, it does grease one's goose, so to speak. So, does anyone know how to export a notebook into google docs? Export gets an error message. I've spent two hours trying to email Google, post to a forum, search for an answer, look through FAQs, to no avail. Anyone??

jlm said...

save it as html, then upload it.

Cindy said...

jlm -- didn't work for me but thanks. I clicked on tools/export as html and was immediately taken to a browser page that displays my notebook as a web page. So, I click File/save page as, in firefox, and I get a folder on my desktop with my web page and associated images. I click import in docs and it sets default to file types allowed. Interestingly enough, the only file types allowed are the pngs and gifs. So, nope, it didn't work for me.

Unknown said...

@Cindy,

If you change the "Recommended Types" drop-down to "All Files"... then browse to the .htm file that was created when you saved the page (outside of the folder, but named the same as the folder)... you can upload that.

Unfortunately, it can't handle the images. I have tried saving an .mht file... this doesn't work... I, too, get an error with the Export directly to Google Docs.

I have continued to use Google Notebook, though not as heavily. I am hoping that by the time Google plans to drop Google Notebook entirely, or merge it into another service, that they will pay attention to these issues and make it easier (more possible) to transfer the content stored in Google Notebook.

Unknown said...

Excellent way to manage information with the labels and comments. I used this as a Knowledge base tool and it will be a great dis-service if it were obsoleted.

Rob Geiger said...

I know this is probably falling on deaf ears, but, seriously, I still use Google Notebook because it is the only Google product I can add to via the Blackberry phone. I find it much better to add notes from my BB than email them to myself.

I was sooooo disappointed when I tried to share a notebook today and those people who had never accessed the service were unable to do so.

I use Google Docs every day, but notebook STILL fills a need for me. It's MUCH more manageable for small notes than Google docs. Really, Google, please reconsider.

Oh man! Just when I dusted my old notebooks off the shelf, created new ones and started using them in anger; here I learn about Google pulling the plug on it!

Why do companies have to tinker with things that just work? From blindly following Google's lead I'm going to be more circumspect about moving things to other Google services on the net, lest they decide to pull the plug when they fancy.

Richard Bruce Baxter said...

Instead of finding the best solutions for us, is Google riding the popularity wave? Has the manager responsible for this decision worked at Google for long - what exactly is the replacement product? (Google Docs are too complicated, and Gmail Tasks are not sufficient either). I thought it was pretty out of place too when it first appeared on the google products page - which seemed to be filling up will all sorts of apps - but it probably never belonged there anyway - of course it is a basic utility and nothing to show off but so is notepad.exe - a simple link to this utility via gmail would be sufficient.

Maybe if they offer encryption to and from Google servers people would feel more inclined to store their personal notes online.

I have been using txt files on every PC I have worked on for over 10 years to store everything I type, find interesting, or may need to refer to again in the future (URLs, logs, search strings, do: lists etc), and have delimited notes with //. I did a search for "google notepad" a few weeks ago when working offsite, was instantly impressed with google notebook, started logging my activity that day, but when I tried finding a link to it via my gmail account - I was suprised to find it was going away.

The benefit of notebook over notepad.exe (or nedit) is that it automatically datestamps your notes, they are available online (so you don't need multiple txt files), and provides a professional search engine.

Interestingly enough I found out a year ago that my older brother had independently derived exactly the same system of recording notes with notepad as I had [and he noted that everything else was too slow on his high end Intel Core 2 Extreme Vista system - I think both notepad and his mouse is too slow on his system but that is another story].

Esp. since I do not see any real alternative yet around other google services. Not even googlewave, nor docs and worse Tasks - the window for my notes is far too small - and insuable for larger contents!

I think you are making a mistake to discontinue this app. It is a real seeler for a more thorough integration of tools in Google Apps and GMail. Now, we have to look at third party solutions. Notebook was perfect for us. We are a corporate user. To us, this is a backwards move. Please reconsider. Thanks.

Surely there is some way of getting it into the "right click" menu via a FF Add On???

BC Armstrong said...

This doesn't inspire faith in your other products. How long until Google Docs bites the dust too? Why should anybody bother with Google Wave (which is fairly useless from what I can see so far, compared to Google Notebook.)
The fact is, your Notebook wasn't very good, compared to others, but you could have improved it. Instead you jump hither and yon, accumulating new products, damaging others (like the translation tool) and all the while failing to tie various products together very well. You waste time (and large salaries!) futzing with the search page ("ooh, cool, the stuff at the top fades in now Marge! Lookee that! Neato! It doesn't improve my ability to find information, but as long as it looks cool!"), but Notebook is too much trouble?

I'm beginning to think you're just gaming us; profit is to be had, apparently, by just garnering attention with new products, however redundant (Chrome, Wave, an entire OS) they are, instead of doing substantial work on usability for the ones you have. Understandable from a business standpoint, I suppose. In the short term. But I think you're over-confident. Enough of this and you alienate people enough that "google" might not always be people's favorite verb for "search". Or maybe the verb will last; I still call everything I blow my nose with a "kleenex", but that company doesn't make any money on it.

I agree with most of the users: Notebook is a fabulous feature. None of the alternative you suggest come close to offering what Notebook does.

I simply want to add that Notebook consolidates the use of the web in ways no other application or programs do - I find it completes the use of the computer and the web as a sort of "end of the road" of what web browsing and computing is all about. And, like most, I find it strange Notebook is not considered a winner and needs to be shelved - unless, maybe like handwriting on tablets and scripting, it requires a small learning curve for the average person and it makes it more difficult for bottom-skimming marketing people to control spending of the masses by creating a lowest common denominator that allows them to sell useless stuff as opposed to following the high road.

So please, let us know why Notebook needs shelving - and assure us that while you may not accept new users, we don't stand to lose it for ourselves. I myself have stopped using it, in fear it will be shut down all of a sudden. If I know my Notebook is safe, I'll be back making use of it every day.

Thank you.

Add my vote to bring Notebook back. It was (is) a very useful utility that really has no equal. I would make the inclusion of a supported notebook capability in Chrome a serious factor in considering it for default browser use.

It would be perfectly understandable if Google is in fact positioning a return of Notebook exclusive to Chrome as added incentive to use their new browser. However if Google initially released Notebook to so many users of other browsers as a free product, with the implication that it would become a staple utility as many other Google tools have become, but harbored an ultimate intention of developing it solely for Chrome, including a plan to drop other browser support, then Google's behavior appears to be flirting with the kinds of monopolistic and anti-competitive practices seen by other corporations that Google has has eschewed as anathema to their core values.

But they're not doing that, right?

Unknown said...

I don't understand why this has been dropped - it's extremely useful and not the same as the service provided by Docs, which I also use.

Really, it was a fantastic thing to have. When I get a phone call or need to jot down a piece of information right away, so often I have to resort to doing it in the address/search field (and then carefully not hit enter). It was also a wonderfully convenient way for me to compile information. The fact that I wouldn't have it ready for me at the click of a button was one reason I was reluctant to switch to chrome... is that what this is all about? Could you just imbed this in chrome already? Or at least give us the option?

Did you do a focus group on this decision or anything? It's a good product and makes using the internet even more effective and fun!

check out "How to Make Extensions Work with the Latest Firefox"
http://www.webupd8.org/2009/06/how-to-make-extensions-work-with-latest.html
You might give it a try.
I STILL HAVE "NOTEBOOK", icon on the page, AFTER UPDATING FIREFOX!!!

I have been using NOTEBOOK consistently with Firefox. Only after updating to the most recent version did I discover that Google discontinued the service. What a shocker! Surely this is a bad decision! And a year's worth of comments here should be enough evidence to the powers that be.

I've used Notebook in places where Google Docs and the other suggestions just don't make sense.

Juggling small scraps of information and being able to collapse into a single line is invaluable when trying to analyze and merge.

I guess it's time to find a replacement and put it in my own cloud.

I'm also disappointed about this decision. can you offer this tool available for download? As server side script is just fine. I'll love to have, for example, a php script like this. Thanks!

Since last time I checked, Google Notebook seems to have graduated from Labs and the notice about shutting it down has been removed from the notebook app.

Does anyone have any idea if Google's plans for notes have changed?

Unknown said...

@Hoakz,

Not sure where you're getting your information from.

This is a list of projects which have graduated from Google Labs, and Google Notebook is nowhere to be seen.

Sorry about that... here:

I'm not at all sure about the date or validity of that post though, and it seems more likely the Labs pages are right and the group are wrong or misinformed...

@Hoaks,

Google Notebook graduated from Google Labs on March 28, 2007.

The announcement that active development would stop on Google Notebook was on January 14, 2009.

So, this is just a matter of looking too far back in time and getting excited over nothing.

Unfortunately.

Unknown said...

I'm still using Google Notebook daily. Is there any chance to start again developing/working at Google Notebook?

qgf said...

Bring it back!!!!!!! Please! Now the browser add-on won't work with the new version of firefox!

Hoakz said...

@Bob

I wasn't getting particularly excited... after all, the most exciting thing Notebook has right now is the Google name (and the potential that would have come with it had Google decided to go back on their previous decision).

I was more confounded, and wanted to see if I was just seeing things (as usual... erm) or if something was going on...

I'm in the process of figuring out what notes app to use so where Google to give Notebook another try it might have been interesting.

Thanks for the replies and the info! I never seem to find those dates that should be mandatory on anything published on the net :S

I can't see any good reason why Google would stop working on a tool that is obviously potentially very useful to many people, and many more people if they were aware of google notes; The only thing that I can guess is that Google must find Notes to be a big drain on their storage capacities: which does not make sense since they can easily cap how much a user can upload and combine those caps with those that they offer for google docs. Another .25 cents per gigabyte would not be too burdensome for most people. If they are cutting back on Note services I don't quite get why they recently offered a google notebook chrome extension, which works very well. It works better than their docs extension in my opinion. At least with notes you can choose which folder and section you want to upload to. I really can't figure why Google is so reluctant to smooth out the easy things, parts; this must be some organizational weakness of theirs; they are good at coming up with innovative ideas but their logical follow up is very lacking. Not a good way to develop a happy and loyal group of users. I don't get it; it is not that hard to figure out what makes things easier for computer users, for productive computer users in any case.

Unknown said...

@tom,

It isn't about drain or storage... it's about redundancy. Some people were using Google Notebook in the same manner that would make sense for Google Docs. Likewise, people were asking for features to be added to Notebook which already existed in Google Docs.

The ability to share notebooks with others was falling behind in functionality when compared to Google Docs.

So, the options were to either roll Google Notebooks into Google Docs... or enhance Google Docs to replace the usefulness of Google Notebook.

In the meantime, there are many plans for Google Docs. So, priority lines needed to be drawn... so the focus was on Google Docs, until a time came where there was a fit for Google Notebooks functionality within Google Docs. This time hasn't quite come yet.

There are tons and tons of other Google Apps available and what is the importance to this little note-booking thing comparing the to the Whole Gooooogle...Well, those who need to scribble too much like me just go to start>Programs>Accessories>Notepad and type whatever you want to and save it in the desktop. That's what I do. And later on after usage I'll delete it or if the matter is worth saving I just go to Google Docs and save it there so that it won't get lost at all.

Hi Navaneet,
One of the great things about Notebook is that it does not have to be confined to one computer but is available on the internet wherever you are and can be shard with others easily.

Like you, I also use other Google products, like Google Docs, and find them useful. I have also tried several alternative to Notebook since it was abandoned by Google but have returned to it as it is still the best of its kind.

Until and unless Google Docs or something else contains the functionality of Notebook . . . there just isn't anything better around than Notebook.

I would encourage my entire company to use Google Notebook if I had some assurance it would continue for years and get some occasional updates.

Google notebook is the most important tool for researchers. And the best feature is the ability to create custom tags for each note. Despite Google's discontinued app, I have continued to add notes to the notebook, because (a) custom keyword tagging of notes is not offered by anyone else; (b) although some alternatives may exist, I rather keep my research on this old database, knowing Google's reputation to keep my data integrity and safety for the foreseeable future.

I've been using Notebook for my classes and it's been the singular most useful tool. I was hoping to start a collaboration with my classmates but apparently I can't trust Notebook to stick around.

I plead that the developers change their mind about this.

Google docs is garbage for non-linear note taking. In a learning environment, the discussions can jump back and forth easily, the ability to locate and alter previous notes, group them and all sorts of powerful features is the only alternative to paper and pencil.

Preventing from new students from taking advantage of this service is a little rotten when Google really does have the best that's not-so-out-there-anymore.

The worst part is not allowing new users to sign up, they'll never be able to tell if the service actually gets popular because they've given it a death sentence.

If I can't trust Google with my notetaking (and I can't use paper and pencil because I have dysgraphia) then I'm just not going to take notes.

I'm really sad to know the Google Notebook service had stopped! I actually discovered this service quite recently, and I much preferred it on Google Docs. To tell the truth, both are different and can't be compared, but I loved how I could keep my notes, articles, links, drafts on Google Notebook as easy as I could on a real notebook and I can't do the same with Google Docs as it doesn't provide the same feel in terms of fast and easy access and how the notes are organized in little pages within the Notebook. Google Docs just feels like using a Microsoft application! I just don't like that! Notebook was a Google invention! I haven't seen anything like it and it wasn't given a proper advertisement, so it's only natural that not many users heard about it! Please think twice before stopping this service!

I'd like to petition to reopen this app. I think it's lack of wides spread use was mainly due to lack of promotion and good how-tos.

I find this took invaluable when making and sharing shopping lists such as: vendor quote tracking, and wish lists.

Google docs takes a bit more resources, and there isn't easy list management and sectioning as in notebook.

Further, anyone who uses Google tasks will realize that it's not a complete list manager. It's nice to be able to segregate things that are notes from tasks or documents. For example lists of potential customers, long term goals don't really belong in a tasks list (or in documents). Similarly, things like how to write a particular shell script, or notes on a particular meeting don't belong with the rest of my documents.

While a non-public blog would be an acceptable, bloggers interface and list management make it inferior for such document tracking. Moreover, since each blog has a focus, I generally don't want these thought snippets mixed in with my published blog works. Further, bloggers interface is set up for quick final publishing, not quick note-taking.

Contrarily, if find the reverse not to be true, as notbook seems to be a perfectly suitable subistute for blogger. As microblogging currently is well accepted, special formatting and well laid out posts are no longer expected of bloggers. Therefore, one can easily clip and post content they are reading and working and share it with the rest of the world with minimal effort in Notebook. Furthermore, this can be done securely so that the whole world doesn't have to have access to it, which is a killer feature most blogs don't have.

Overall, it would seem quite apparent, that there is no reasonable substitute for Google notebook.

In the meanwhile, MS Office continues to support notes. Just as google apps couldn't substitute for MS Office with out a decent task list manager. I now think google will struggle to compete with out an adiquite note taking application.

As a small correction to an earlier post, there are actually 1633 comments, but blogger only shows the most recent 422 when you click "Post a Comment".

I came here today searching for an answer, and I'm left with more questions.

Since announcing that you were going to stop development, there have been comments posted every month asking WHY?!?!?!

I've always assumed that one comment equals "x" number of people who arrived at the same place but didn't comment. For my small business, it is usually 500. But for Google, it has to be closer to 5,000 or 10,000 maybe.

How can Google Notebook be irrelevant when soooo many people want it?

Please reconsider the freeze on development and give us some new features!! I'll continue using Notebook, but I'd love to see it brought fully up to date.

What else can be said beyond what's been said 1,600+ times? Google Notebook is a very, very useful tool. I never leave comments, but I want this product to come alive and stay alive. I don't find any of your proposed technology workarounds to provide comparable functionality. If you're not happy with the number of users, I would argue that it's due to your weak marketing. I love your interface across-the-board. But, your marketing group does a pretty poor job of aligning benefits to functionality. Users just don't understand the benefits and don't spend the time to investigate further. That's not the engineering group's fault. That's your marketing group's failure.

I was very sad to see Google Notebook being stopped and I've been around looking for alternatives which I must say they were not near in terms of functionality and easiness of use GNotebook. But I think I found a solution which seems to far quite good. It's called Diigo and you add as extension in Google Chrome. It allows you to annotate the websites and create lists (instead of notebooks within your account). I also allows you to use your google account and import your Google Notebooks via Atom file really nice. So far I'm really happy and if they keep developing it I think it is the solution!

Well it's over a year later and Google kept their word.. Still works just as well as it ever did... for those of us lucky to have it google notebook is a wonderful tool

It's obviously not the same thing... but Google Bookmarks has suddenly been getting a lot of attention lately. You can now create "lists"... the lists can contain bookmarks, including links to Google Documents... the lists can be private... private and shared with only certain contacts or groups... or public.

The lists can also have sections (but not subsections).

So MAYBE... JUST MAYBE... Google's plan might be to give Google Bookmarks "Google Notebook"-like functionality over time.

It's really hard to tell at this point... first, they were giving Google Notebook functionality to manage bookmarks... NOW they've stopped development on Google Notebook and have been giving Google Bookmarks all of the attention.

In the meantime, bookmark sync in Google Chrome uses Google Docs and has no official ties to Google Bookmarks, which just adds to the confusion for Google Chrome users. Hopefully they have some sort of plan and aren't just shooting from the hip still.

After having looked at and tried all the alternatives mentioned here and many more besides (the Firefox Addon "SimilarWeb" was great for digging these out) I have plumped for NotePub http://notepub.com/

It is missing some features of Google Notebook but it has others that make up for it.

The interface is one of the loveliest I have ever seen. The instructions are concise and clear (it deserves a "Plain English" award).

The design, with staggeringly easy access to and control of complex features, deserves a design award.

I am also heartily sick of Google tracking, consolidating and sharing information about all the Google products I use - and buying-up all the other goodies I have found. I sincerely hope that they leave Notepub alone.

All you need to do to register an account, and you can open asmany as you like, is choose a username that has not already been used and a password. That's it. No email address, date of birth, hat size, etc.

Whether Notepub suits anyone else depends on how you use Google Notebook. As mentioned, it does not have all the features of Notebook and it is structured differently but, for how I use Notebook, it is a better alternative than Evernote, Zoho, Springnote, Ubernote, etc. etc. All very lovely in their own way, but not quite what I was looking for.

There are a few more on my short-list that I still need to have a peek at but I would deinitely give NOtepub 10 out 10 for doing what it sets out to do so well.

I wanted to sign up for this feature, and I watched a video about how to use it, ready to get to work with it...and no I can't! I am not sure what every other person that already had notebook is complaining about their fine..It's people like me, the new guy that wants to use it but can't. The other google features just aren't the same. Please reconsider.
